Oral, Head and Neck Pathology for the General Dentist—A Hands-on

An oral cancer screening should be provided to all patients that receive an initial or recall comprehensive examination. We all attended dental school to receive academic training. This course will augment your didactic training and teach you how to incorporate a practical approach for patient care in your practice There will be an oral pathology review to enable the dentist to differentiate and diagnose hard and soft tissue lesions. The participation exercises will be performed on pig jaws. You may choose to refer cases for biopsies, but you should know how the tissue samples are harvested. Dr. Olsen will guide you through these processes to ensure that you will provide the very best care for your patients. The hands-on portion of the course will also feature t- blue uses, VELscope applications, soft tray fabrication for immune based pathology cases, bone trephine exercises, and use of neuromodulators for TMD cases. His goal is to share his knowledge for early diagnosis and treatment.

About the Speaker:

Dr. John Olsen is a solo practitioner in General and Advanced Surgical Dentistry in Franklin, Wisconsin since 1992. Full time Faculty at Marquette School of Dentistry in research and instruction of Anatomical Sciences from 1980 – 1992. Adjunct Faculty at Milwaukee Area Technical College, Clinic Supervisor; Course Director for Oral Pathology; Course Director for Pharmacology 1995-2006. A recognized graduate from the Misch Implant Institute, Dr. Olsen is now on the faculty, teaching more than 120 students per year in Implant Dentistry. He is also a recognized member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) of which he is a Diplomat of this organization. As a member of the ICOI, Dr. Olsen was the previous chief author and chair of the Diplomat Exam in Implantology. Dr. Olsen was a contributor for the Dental Assistant National Board Exam (DANB) for 6 years and the Fellowship Exam in the AGD for 10 years.

Treatment And Management of The Pulp Exposure Due to Trauma- A Hands-On Course

We have all encountered the Friday afternoon phone call at 10 minutes to 5 pm with a patient presenting with a dental injury. Dental Traumatic Injuries (DTI) are common in children. In fact, 30% of all childhood injuries are oral. This presentation will discuss taking a good dental trauma history and what radiographs are indicated and why, explain and describe the different types of dental injuries, simplify the diagnosis, treatment of the most common dental injuries in children and describe the follow up protocols as well as the methods and techniques of preventing injuries. New and updated information will be given on how to give painless injections and why Articane is now the preferred local anesthetic of choice due to its safety. Case studies will be presented of the most common injuries so that the learner will be able to confidently identify, recognize and treat any type of dental injury including pulp exposures with greater than 90% success. The learner will be able to apply this information the next day in their office.

 Goals:

• Learn how to recognize a pulp exposure due to trauma
• Learn how to manage and follow up on teeth that are involved in dental trauma
• Learn the proper application of tricalcium silicates in teeth with traumatic injury
• Understand which dental materials and techniques to use in dental anesthetics

Objectives:

• Attendees will be able to take a proper dental trauma history and be able to apply and describe the AAE’s dental trauma guidelines
• Attendees will be able to list the steps for mixing and placing a tricalcium silicate, Biodentine for Direct Pulp Caps
• Attendees will be able to apply, to a traumatized tooth, a specific tooth prep involving multiple bevels for the best aesthetic outcome after trauma
• Attendees with be able to describe the steps for restoring an uncomplicated enamel fracture for the best aesthetic outcomes

About the Speaker:

With over forty-eight years of professional experience as a Pediatric Dentist combined with managerial skills, Board Certification, MAGD, FAAPD, teaching, published, CDE lecturer, hospital dentistry, and operating room privileges. Dr. Lance Kisby is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine he then completed his Pediatric Dental Residency at Floating Hospital at the New England Medical Center in Boston, MA. Dr. Kisby went on to be Chief of Pediatric Dentistry and Assistant Director of Dentistry at R.I. Hospital in Providence, R.I. He then went on to spend 17 years in private practice in Massachusetts until he accepted the position of Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT.

He has been Board Certified in Pediatric Dentistry since 1983, was a former Contributing editor to the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, has multiple publications, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as well as a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry.

This presentation will focus on the techniques and anatomy for all dental injections through an exciting, novel digital teaching modality. Visualization of vital structures and anatomical landmarks will be delivered in an unforgettable approach using CT data with 3D volume rendering and maximum intensity imaging. An overview of anesthetic performance will also be included, discussing the real time course of analgesia and buffering local anesthetic, which can dramatically improve the onset of analgesia. This course covers topics including pharmacology of local anesthetics, chemistry, formulation, physiology, local anesthetics and infected tissue; causes of injection pain; measuring and achieving anesthetic success, definition of success, failures and consequences of failed anesthetic, how to eliminate certain types of failures. Systemic and local complications of anesthetic injections, including the ten most common complications you will see in practice.

Learning Objectives:

• Review pharmacology of local anesthesia
• Understand injection pain and its implications
•  Feel confident delivering local anesthesia by having a thorough review of head and neck anatomy.
• Describe the standard of care ABC protocol of local anesthesia.
•  Participant will be able to (a) describe the causes, (b) properly diagnose, and (c) treatment plan the effective management of local anesthetic complications.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Falkel received his Bachelor’s degree in 1984 from the University of Albany in New York, and his Dental degree in 1987 from the University of the Pacific. He completed a general practice residency at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital in 1988. During 1988 and 1989, he was an associate in a general practice in Salinas. In 1989, he became a partner in the Monterey Peninsula Dental Group. Dr. Falkel is married, with two daughters, and he and his family enjoy golf, snow skiing and traveling. Dr. Falkel is a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association and
the Monterey Bay Dental Society.
