Lecture: Artistic and Scientific Elements…The Essence of Modern-Day Ceramics

Hands on: Preparation and Cementation Guidelines for Ceramic Partial Coverage Restorations

Course Summary:

Are you still preparing full coverage crowns for every restorative case? Learn how to use today’s ceramic materials to prep conservatively and preserve as much tooth structure as possible. At this course, participants will learn the actual science behind ceramic materials and if you’ve always wanted to know how to prepare teeth for onlays or partial crowns, this is the hands on course for you.

Course Details:

In today’s world patients are more judgmental regarding esthetic outcomes, as to their success or failure. The cost of high-noble alloys has spiked, and CADCAM technologies have enabled single day delivery of indirect restorations at a fairly reasonable cost to the dentist.  Consequently, these developments influence dentists’ treatment recommendations to their patients. These factors have dictated the increased use of ceramic materials despite the fact that most of these modern ceramic systems do not possess reliable clinically based evidence for their success. It is crucial for the dentist to analyze currently reported clinical trials and systematic reviews, with caution, relative to understanding the limitations of data derived from in-vitro studies before concluding any clinical judgments or making subsequent patient recommendations.

This presentation will analyze ceramic systems in the context of the current scientific evidence-based research. In addition, it will present suggestions for use of specific ceramic systems in specific clinical conditions.

Lecture objectives:

  • Define the composition, mechanical and optical properties of modern day ceramic systems.
  • Establish criteria for ceramic material selection.
  • Discuss clinically based evidence relating to current ceramic systems
  • Appraise a new approach that may help identify the success rate of current ceramic systems.
  • List cementation criteria to optimize bond strength to the tooth structure.

Hands on exercise objectives:

  • Practice ceramic partial coverage restoration preparation of various clinical scenarios.
  • Use of bis-acryl temporary material and dual-cure temporary cements for successful temporization.
  • Employ the use of adhesive resin cement to successfully bond a lithium disilicate onlay restoration.

Presenter Bio:

TAISEER SULAIMAN is the director of the Advanced Operative Dentistry Course and Biomaterials Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he gained his clinical certificate in Operative Dentistry, and completed his PhD in Dental Materials from the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomaterial Sciences from the University of Turku in Finland in collaboration with the Department of Operative Dentistry, University of North Carolina. Dr. Sulaiman is a clinician and a researcher hoping to bridge gaps between dental research and clinical application. Dr. Sulaiman’s research focus is on dental ceramics, adhesion, cements, color and appearance in dentistry and biomimetics. He is a member of numerous academies including the IADR/AADR, Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Society of Color and Appearance in Dentistry and the American Dental Association. He has lectured on numerous national and international stages, and serves as a reviewer for many peer-reviewed dental journals.
