Course Description:
This course will outline the common causes of orofacial trauma in both athletic settings as well as common causes of falls and injuries to the head and neck region in daily activities of several different age groups, and the management of traumatic dental injuries in the general dental practice. It is not only the athletes that are at high risk for these types of injuries but the adolescents, elderly and the active patient population can all be at risk and potential trauma patients in the general dentists’ practice. The knowledge on how to manage these patients with a prepared timely protocol can be crucial to both salvaging their dentition and ensuring the health and retention of their injured teeth or jaws for years to come.
Objectives
- To identify common injuries both sports related and those that occur in our activities of daily living and the age groups and cohorts most commonly at risk for orofacial injuries.
- Classification of the types of injuries, hard and soft tissue involvement. Knowing why time is crucial in the long-term prognosis for treatment of these injuries.
- Having a prearranged examination protocol with the knowledge of which radiographic and imaging to use
- Management of the common traumatic dental and alveolar/TMJ injuries. Knowing when to splint injured and luxated teeth with what materials and for what length of time.
- Know the current management of pulpal exposures in teeth with both developed and undeveloped apices
- Prevention methods of traumatic dental injuries
